5 Parenting Hacks That Saved My Sanity in the First Year

Published on 14 July 2026 at 11:56

When I became a mum, I quickly realised that no amount of parenting books could prepare me for the chaos of everyday life with a baby. The midnight feeds, the mountains of washing, the endless search for missing socks – it was all far more intense (and sometimes hilarious) than I’d ever imagined.

Over time, I picked up a few little tricks and tips that made those early months much easier. They’re not fancy, and they don’t require buying endless gadgets. They’re simple, practical, and they genuinely saved my sanity. Here are my top five.

1. Pre-packed bag for outings

One of the best things I ever did was keeping a bag pre-packed for outings. That way, when my baby woke from a nap, we were ready to head out the door without the hassle of wondering what else to pack. It saved me from that last-minute panic of nappies, wipes, spare clothes, bottles – everything was already there, waiting.

This is also why I love making matching sets at Little White Foxes – they take the guesswork out of dressing, so getting out the door is simpler.

2. The laundry lifesaver

Baby clothes are adorable, but they also attract stains faster than anything else. Keeping a small soak tub in the bathroom made all the difference for me. I’d toss stained items in straight away with a bit of mild detergent, which stopped me from spending hours scrubbing later.

Durable fabrics matter so much here. It’s why I always choose strong, sustainable cottons for my handmade pieces – because clothes should last through plenty of washes.

Top tip: Put a little washing-up liquid on the milk stains before putting the clothes in the washing machine. This will help break down the fatty stain and remove it from the fabric fibres completely!

3. Don’t feel guilty about napping with your baby

One of the hardest things for me was letting go of the guilt around housework or “being productive”. I learnt that if I was tired, it was okay – and actually necessary – to nap when the baby napped. The laundry, the dishes, the to-do list could wait. Rest made me a happier mum.

4. Baby-carrier vs. pram – know your moment

There’s no “one right way” when it comes to getting out with your little one. You will know what's best for you and for your baby.

If you’re a C-section mum, as I am, you’ll need to use a pram — there’s no question about that. After the critical six-week period, you can switch to a baby carrier. After my second baby was born, I used the carrier more often, mostly indoors. If I needed to cook or do the laundry and my baby was fussy, the carrier made it easy to get things done. But if we went for a walk, the pram won every time. Knowing when to use each saved me so much stress.

And speaking of outings – this is why I made footed baby pants. I was tired of losing socks on every walk. Footed pants stay on, keep toes cosy, and save you from rooting around for missing bits while juggling the pram!

Please note: footed baby pants are no longer available at Little White Foxes, BUT you can still find footed baby rompers :)

5. Ask your partner for help (and take self-time)

It’s easy as mums to feel like we need to do everything ourselves. But one of the best “hacks” I learnt was to lean on my husband and ask for help. Even an hour to have a cup of tea, having my nail done, go for a short walk, or soak in the bath made all the difference. Parenthood is teamwork, and taking that little time for yourself is not selfish – it’s essential.

Final thoughts

These little hacks made my life with a newborn more manageable (and sometimes even enjoyable). Every parent finds their own rhythm, but if even one of these ideas helps you breathe a little easier, then I’m glad to share them.

Over to you: Do you have a parenting hack that saved your sanity? Share it in the comments – I’d love to collect more tips for the Little White Foxes community.

See you in the next post! xx
