How To Dress Your Baby for Each Season

Published on 27 November 2025 at 11:00

Dressing a baby for the changing seasons can be tricky, especially here in the UK, where the weather is so unpredictable! One minute it's sunny, next there is a sudden rainstorm. If you are unsure how to layer up (or down) for each season, here is a handy guide to keep your baby comfortable all year round.

Spring (March-May): Layers Are Key

Spring in the UK can be mild, but unpredictable, so layering is the best approach.

  • Light cotton bodysuits - short or long sleeved, depending on the day
  • Cardigans or jumpers - easy to remove if it warms up
  • Lightweight hat - protects from cool breezes
  • Raincoat/waterproof all-in-one and wellies - because let's be honest; April showers are a thing!

Top tip: Always carry an extra layer in your bag - spring weather changes instantly..

Summer (June-August): Keep It Cool

Summers here aren't extreme, but babies can still overheat easily.

  • Short-sleeved bodysuits and rompers - breathable fabrics like cotton or muslin
  • Sun hat - for sun protection
  • Lightweight sleeping bag - 0.5 or 1.0 tog for warm nights

Top tip: Keep baby out of direct sunlight and always use sun cream and a sunshade when out in the pram.

Autumn (September-November): Time To Layer Up Again

Autumn brings chiller mornings and mild afternoons, so dressing in layers remains key.

  • Long-sleeved bodysuits and leggings/tights - comfy and warm
  • Knitted jumpers or fleece cardigans - for an extra cosy layer
  • Waterproof jacket -
  • Pram footmuff or blanket - to keep baby snug and warm when out and about

Top tip: Wool or fleece lined booties help keep the tiny toes warm, especially when temperatures drop!

Winter (December-February): Stay Cosy and Warm

Winters can be cold, damp and windy, so keeping your baby warm without overheating is important.

  • Padded snowsuit - for outdoor adventures
  • Winter hat, gloves and warm socks - babies lose heat quickly through their hands, feet and head
  • 2.5 or 3.5 tog sleeping bag - for chilly winter nights
  • Thermal leggings

Top tip: When your baby is in the car seat, it is better to avoid thick coats or snowsuits - use a blanket over the straps instead for safety.

Final Thoughts

Dressing your baby doesn't have to be stressful! The key is to layer smartly, use breathable fabrics, and always check your baby's temperature (feel their chest or back, not hands or feet to see if they are too hot or cold).
